Laundry Made Easier: Simple Systems That Actually Work

I hear from so many clients how much they dislike doing laundry. Whether your laundry area is a large room or a small closet, the secret to removing the dread is creating a system that works with you, not against you.

Create Your Zones

Efficiency starts with Zoning. Think about the tasks you perform and create a dedicated spot for each:

  • Washing Zone: Keep your detergent, stains removers, and pocket-emptying bins right next to the machine.

Pro Tip: I recommend using a washing machine cleaning once a month to keep your machine running at its best.

  • Drying Zone: Store dryer sheets or balls here. I recommend a small wastebasket or a magnetic lint bin nearby to remind your brain to clear the lint trap after every load.

  • Hanging & Folding: If space is tight, use your vertical space. A back-of-the-door rack or a wall-mounted drying unit works wonders. (I added a mesh cloth for easy flat drying space too).

A wall-mounted drying rack makes smart use of

vertical space while supporting delicate items.

Pro Tip: If folding feels like the hardest part, try pairing it with something you enjoy — a favorite TV show or podcast. Many people find it much easier to finish the job when it feels less like a chore.

  • Ironing/Steaming: If possible, keep your ironing board set up to remove barriers. If space is limited, a wall-mounted ironing board that folds down works well.

Pro Tip: The Steamer: A hand-held steamer is often faster, takes less space, and is easier for beginners and teens.

Conquering the Sock Monster

Matching socks is one of the most common laundry frustrations. Try one of these simple hacks:

  1. The Uniform: Buy one type of sock per person (all white, all black, etc.). No matching needed — just toss them in a bin.

  2. The Mesh Bag Method

Give each family member a small mesh lingerie bag for socks. The bag goes through wash and dry cycles, keeping each person’s socks together.

Choose the Schedule That Fits Your Life

This is where most people get stuck. There is no “right” way to do laundry — there is only the way that works for you. Consider these three schedules:

1. The “One Load a Day” Method

Great for preventing overwhelming piles. You assign categories to specific days.

Example:

  • Monday — Dark clothes

  • Tuesday — Lights/Whites

  • Wednesday — Kids’ clothes

  • Saturday — Bedding

  • Sunday — Towels

Pro Tip: Always leave one “Open Day” as a catch-up day. We all know life never goes exactly according to plan!

2. The “Person-a-Day” Method

If you have a larger household, this cuts down on the “putting away” phase.

  • Monday is Mom’s day,

  • Tuesday is Dad’s,

  • Wednesday is Child #1, and so on.

  • Since each load belongs to only one person, they can take their clean pile and put it away immediately. No more sorting through a giant mountain of mixed clothes to find a specific pair of pants.

Pro Tip: I suggest using a color catching sheet to prevent color runs with this method.

3. The “All-or-Nothing” Method

Do you have a marathon personality? Choose one day and complete all loads back-to-back. Good for people who prefer to finish it all at once.

Pro Tip: If laundry tends to get forgotten mid-cycle, try setting a phone alarm when you start each load. This small step can prevent rewashing and keeps your routine moving.

A Win-Win for Parents

Laundry is a vital life skill. You can start teaching children as young as five years old — they usually love the “game” of matching socks! As they get older, introduce tools like detergent sheets or Swash. These are much easier for small hands to handle than heavy plastic jugs, they eliminate messy spills, and they ensure the correct amount of soap is used every time. Plus, they save a ton of space.

Final Thought

Laundry does not have to feel endless or overwhelming. When your space is set up to support how you live, laundry becomes just another routine — not a dreaded chore.
