3 Step Guide to Stress-Free Decor Storage

I consistently hear from my clients that seasonal decor eats up much of their storage space-in some homes, I see it consuming nearly 50% of available capacity! This overwhelming feeling is backed by data: the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) confirms that a large percentage of people report feeling stress and anxiety due to clutter, with seasonal goods being one of the top problems.

Managing your seasonal and holiday decor doesn’t have to be a yearly source of stress. By applying a few simple organizational principles, you can save time, money, and anxiety, allowing you to enjoy the season to its fullest.

Step 1: The Initial Purge (Before the Season)

Before you put anything up, take a moment to look at everything you have for that season or holiday.

Declutter With Intention

Is there anything you can let go of? Look for items that are broken, faded, or simply no longer fit your aesthetic (perhaps you’ve changed your home’s color palette or moved).

The Donation Window

To ensure your unwanted items have a chance at a second life and avoid the landfill, it’s essential to donate them during the relevant season.

Step 2: Decorating with a Plan (During the Season)

As you decorate, maintain an “intentional inventory.”

Take Notes

Keep a list of items that need to be replaced. This simple step helps you prevent excess purchasing later.

Adapt the 1-In 1-Out Rule

If you purchase a new piece of decor, commit to letting go of an older, similar item. This powerful rule is a key strategy for preventing future clutter.

Step 3: Thoughtful Put-Away (After the Season)

When it’s time to pack up, your storage solution should be tailored to your available space and the items’ needs.

Measure Your Space:

Before buying containers, measure your storage area (e.g., attic, garage, closet). We store for our space, not our stuff. Knowing your limits prevents you from buying more containers than will fit.

Foundational Rules for Storage Bins

Same size, Stackable

Storage unit labeled Spring, Easter, 4th July, X-mas Tree, and Fall.
Using bins of the same size and brand allows for convenient, stable stacking.

Weight:

Consider the filled weight of the bins, especially if you handle the lifting yourself.

Professional-Grade Storage Solutions

Protection:

For durable, heavy-duty storage that handles weight and stacking, I recommend the Greenmade Storage Bins. https://usmerchants.com/greenmade. These are a fantastic, versatile solution for both interior closet and unheated garage storage. Made from heavy-duty, BPA-free plastic, the reinforced base is built to handle heavy loads, meaning you can confidently stack multiple full bins of lights or ceramic decor without worrying about cracking or warping. Furthermore, the recessed lid design is critical for stability, allowing you to create tall, space-saving stacks, and the ergonomic handles make hauling them in and out of storage much more comfortable.

Weather-tight:

For items stored in non-climate-controlled spaces like garages, sheds, or attics, a watertight seal is non-negotiable. I recommend The Container Store’s Clear Weathertight Totes See the Weathertight Totes at The Container Store. I personally use these ultra-clear, stackable, and moisture-proof totes for my own garden supplies, which stay outside all year round, and they have held up beautifully year after year. The secure, locking latches truly provide an air- and watertight seal, protecting your valuables from the elements.

Special Considerations:

Christmas Trees

Choose between a wheeled canvas bag or a couple sturdy bins for tree sections, depending on the size. A canvas bag saves space but offers less protection; bins protect better but require organized stacking. Always measure your storage spot before purchasing either solution!

Candles

If you live in a warm climate, always store candles inside your main living space to prevent deforming (or melting!). I learned the hard way, so I keep mine in a labeled bin on a high shelf in my linen closet, since I don’t access them frequently.

Strategic Packing Methods

Pack each bin strategically in a way that makes sense for your retrieval process.

  1. By Item Type (Most Common): All wreaths together, all ornaments together, etc.

  2. By Room (An Efficient Way): While organizing by “like items” is common, consider categorizing by “room of display” instead. This method allows you to simply place one bin in the designated area (e.g., the Dining Room bin), minimizing trips and preventing a temporary unpacking mess. You can then move onto the next room.

Whatever method you choose, always clearly label each bin with its contents and/or its room destination.

A Note on Sentimental Decor

If you genuinely love an item and have practical space for it, keep it. However, if you are keeping something only out of guilt, it’s time to reconsider. You are not honoring the memory by storing the item perpetually in a dark box. Instead, find peace in passing it on to a friend or family member who will actively use and enjoy it. No guilt needed.

When we learn to be purposeful with our decor, you will find you will have much less anxiety and will enjoy the Holiday that much more. If you require further assistance, reach out to a professional organizer.
